Highlights of the GAPFA Technical Congress and General Assembly meeting 2022

The Technical Congress and General Assembly meeting 2022 of the Global Alliance of Pet Food Associations (GAPFA) were held online on 20th and 21st June.

On 20th June, nearly 40 GAPFA members from all over the world joined the discussions of the virtual GAPFA Technical Congress. The participants warmly welcomed Mr Lucas Cypriano from the World Renderers Organization (WRO), who provided an overview on the sustainability of pet food and rendered pet food ingredients, including highlights about the growth of biodiesel, the challenge with fertilizers and the potential impact on animal feed ingredients used in pet food. In addition, Mr Richard Casey, World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Executive Director, provided insights about trends and challenges to the veterinary profession and highlighted current opportunities.

The GAPFA General Assembly 2022 took place on 21st June as a virtual meeting and covered statutory requirements only.

The following GAPFA Officers were elected by the GAPFA General Assembly to serve a 1-year term renewable: Carlos A. González (Hill’s Pet Nutrition) as GAPFA President, Michelle Lang (PFIAA) as GAPFA Vice-President for Member Associations, and Balázs Pályi (Mars Petcare) as GAPFA Vice-President for Member Companies.

Also, the General Assembly appointed the following Workstream Chairs: Moran Tal Gavriel (Mars Petcare) and Lisa Conboy-Schmidt (Nestlé Purina PetCare) as Nutrition WS Chairs, John Karslake (NZPFMA) and Fausto Fiorini (ABINPET) as Food Safety & Trade Facilitation WS Chairs, and Francisco Rios (Mars Petcare) and Bill Salzman (Nestlé Purina PetCare) as Communications WS Chairs.

The General Assembly unanimously agreed to the application from the China Feed industry Association (CFIA) to join GAPFA as an Association Member from 1st July 2022.
